"When I felt the twig give way and snap under my feet,
                    I knew I was a goner."

Did he know where he was going? Was he leading me into a trap? I didn't know at the time, and I don't think I ever will. I got close enough and raised my weapon. At the same time we finally broke through the thick brush and the sun flooded in to greet us. Before I could hurl my axe, he suddenly disappeared with a high pitched yelp, as if the ground underneath him suddenly vanished out of thin air. I suppose it did, because when I got closer, salt water air greeted me as I stood at the edge of a cliff face. Looking down into the ocean water I could tell the poor guy fell very very far.

Lost and disappointed that I had to come home empty-handed, I left the ocean air and my fallen prey as I headed north back into the brush.  I didn't realize it when I first ran through, but the part of the wilderness that my former prey had led me through seemed almost devoid of life. The trees overhead were so thick it blocked out any sunlight from above. I was astonished that I had sprinted through here without running into anything as I was now nearly feeling my way around. But the part that gave me shivers was that there wasn't a single sound. No birds chirping, no rustling of small animals, nothing. It seemed that the wilderness had banished this forest and any life from coming inside it, even light. It was an eerie, unwelcoming feeling.  As I picked up my pace, I suddenly felt the hairs on my back stand up. Axe raised, I sharply turned to face the darkness behind me. I didn't hear it, nor could I see it. But I felt it. A pair of eyes staring at me. I now became the hunted.

I stood there for what it felt like a Hyul watching the darkness, waiting for the shadow within the shadows to strike. After a while I slowly turned, making sure not to give my position away. I assumed that my predator was as blind as I was, or else I'd be dinner by now.  I was safe as long as they couldn't hear me. So I pressed north, quick and quiet as I what we're known for. I wasn't going to meet my end. Not here.

Blending speed and stealth, I traveled in that barren forest for hours. The stress started to take it's toll and felt like the energy was being sucked away from me to feed this place. I wasn't sure if the pair of eyes was following me or not anymore, and I was begining to stop caring. Nor did I know if the sun was even out anymore. I just needed to get out of this evil place.

Eventually I saw strands of sunlight leaking through the trees in the distance. Eager to leave, I quickly made my way to the light, neglecting the stealth I had obessed of earlier. I couldn't wait to get out of this life-sucking forest and to get back to my home, to get to my family and back to the wilderness. I was about an arm's length of the light when it happened.

When I felt the twig give way and snap under my feet, I knew I was a goner. The shadow behind me was watching me this whole time, but I had become too distracted from leaving this place to notice. Instinct kicked in as I turned and to raise my axe, but it was too late.

I felt a blow to my chest and stumbled backward through the light, and down a steep hillside. I landed hard, and I could only see blurry stars. I no longer had my axe, but it didn't matter because my arms couldn't move, pinned up against my sides. I was too weak to fight back now. Despite all of this, I could hear the birds and deer nearby, along with a rushing waterfall. Even though I was out of that horrendous place I would at least die where I belong. In the wilderness.

Dazed and the wind knocked out of me, I still couldn't see. I braced for the end, for a pair of fangs or claws to sink into me, when I heard a high-pitched laugh on top of me...
